THE WRITING PROCESS Invention: Vocabulary Used on Essay Examinations
When a question asks you to: Write an essay including:
1. analyze -------------------- a detailed examination of
topic; divide into parts
and discuss each part.
2. argue ----------------------- Your opinion and reasons
supporting it.
3. compare --------------------- two or more items showing
similarities and differences.
4. contrast -------------------- two or more items showing
dissimilarities and differences.
5. criticize ------------------- your opinion of a text and the
arguments that support or reject
it.
6. diagram --------------------- a picture, chart, or plan.
7. define ---------------------- exact meaning of, precise
description of, word or idea.
8. enumerate ------------------- a numbered list of items or
ideas--1,2,3,4, etc.
9. evaluate -------------------- a reasoned judgment;
authoritative reasons.
10. explain --------------------- the reasons for or the meaning
of something.
11. illustrate ------------------ an example or examples.
12. interpret ------------------- an explanation of what
you think something means.
13. outline --------------------- main points and essential
details.
14. summarize ------------------- the core ideas of a text or .
texts.
15. trace ----------------------- a sequence--start with a date
and go forward or backward.
16. discuss --------------------- any combination of the above in
essay form.
