GRAMMAR AND MECHANICS The Verb System: Tense Consistency and Correct Form (Exercise A)
Read the following paragraph carefully, checking for correct verb
tense and form. Strike out any verbs that are not consistent, that
are the incorrect form, or that do not express the correct time
period, and write the correct form above them.
(1) Since 1900, Americans had seen many changes in technology
and their everyday lives. (2) It is impossible for someone who was
30 in 1900 to anticipate the many changes in our country. (3) A
major change has been in transportation. (4) The development of
mechanical engines was making the horses and buggy obsolete. (5)
The automobile had given Americans the freedom to travel long
distances for vacations or work. (6) Also, consider the invention
of the airplane. (7) It use to take months to travel from New York
to San Francisco; now it will take only a few short hours.
(8) Moreover, Americans currently can travel to the moon. (9) Such
inventions are no longer dreams of science-fiction writers.
(10) Another major change has been in power sources. (11) Nuclear
power plants generated electricity for many cities, and solar
panels provided energy to heat our homes. (12) Finally, computers
will have enabled us to store information and provide us with
entertainment. (13) Certainly, Americans have benefitted from this
technology. (14) Recent technology was also revolutionizing our
daily lives. (15) Microwave ovens cook our food quickly, and many
people enjoy video games. (16) In addition, an ever-increasing
number of Americans owned home computers which keep an inventory of
household supplies, balance bank statements, will educate us, and
have provided entertainment. (17) Also, the car has give Americans
freedom and mobility; in fact, a car seems to be a necessity in
modern America. (18) Because of technology, our lives bore little
resemblance to those of Americans in 1900.
