WRITING FOR ENGLISH COURSES
English 004: Sample Questions #4

The directions that appear below are the ones that you will receive when you take the final exam for English 004.

Directions: Write an essay one one of the topics listed below. You will have 90 minutes to complete your essay. You should spend the first 60 minutes planning and writing your essay. If you bring a dictionary, you may use it only during the last 30 minutes.

1. Although males and females are obviously different, some people say that the differences have been over-emphasized. That is, in most societies boys have been raised quite differently from girls. If you had both a son and a daughter, would you raise them differently from each other? How would you do this and why would you? If you would not, why not, and how would you raise them?

2. Most of us have had jobs in the past that we have either hated or loved. Some jobs don't even seem like work, while other jobs seem like punishment. Describe a job that you either hated or loved and explain why or felt that way.

3. Almost everyone has fears. For example, people are afraid of dogs, of heights, of the dark, of the subways, or even of making a mistake. Describe one of your fears, explain why you have this fear, and give an example of how this fear affects your life.

4. We live in a big city where people constantly have problems with institutions. For example, someone's school has lost its records, someone receives a bill from a store for something that he or she never bought, or someone's landlord refuses to fix a broken ceiling. Describe a problem that you have had with an institution, and explain how you solved this problem.
