Sample Writing Assignment
With these reading selections by Robert Reich and Philip Slater in mind, write an essay in
which you discuss the separation of communities in modern society. In your essay,
summarize what Reich says about the ways our communities sort us into different social or
economic groups. Draw a relationship between Reich's thinking and what you have just read
in "Engagement and Detachment: Getting Involved" by Philip Slater about how and why
Americans avoid confronting chronic social problems. In light of the reading selections,
discuss your own knowledge or observations about competition and cooperation in our
society. Also discuss the degree to which your perspective or experience reflects the ideas of
either or both writers.
